OM2 fiber refers to multimode fiber that, at the 850/1300 nm windows, provides overfilled launch bandwidth of 500/500 MHz·km or higher. It uses LED light sources, has a core diameter of 50 μm, and typically features an orange outer jacket. It can be used in Ethernet networks below 10 Gbps and is most commonly deployed in Gigabit Ethernet. Compared with OM1 fiber, OM2 fiber has a reduced core diameter, which effectively lowers the modal dispersion of multimode fiber, increases bandwidth, and reduces manufacturing costs by one‑third. OM2 (50/125 μm) graded‑index multimode fiber meets or exceeds the requirements of the ISO/IEC 11801-1 OM1 specification, the IEC 60793-2-10 A1-OM1 specification, and the TIA-492AAAF A1-OM1 specification.
